Synovial joints are freely movable joints containing synovial fluid, and are classified into six main types based on the movements they allow.

Synovial joints are characterised by the presence of a fluid-filled synovial cavity between the articulating bones, allowing free and extensive movement (unlike fibrous or cartilaginous joints). The main types, and where they are found in the human body, are: (1) Ball-and-socket joint — the rounded head of one bone fits into a cup-like cavity of another, allowing movement in almost all directions; found at the shoulder (between the humerus and pectoral girdle) and hip (between the femur and pelvic girdle). (2) Hinge joint — permits movement in only one plane, like a door hinge; found at the elbow, knee, and ankle. (3) Pivot joint — allows rotatory movement around a central axis; found between the atlas and axis vertebrae of the neck, enabling side-to-side head rotation. (4) Gliding joint — permits limited sliding movements between flat bone surfaces; found between the carpals of the wrist and the tarsals of the ankle. (5) Saddle joint — allows movement in two plan …
