Pneumatophores are 'breathing roots' found in mangrove plants growing in oxygen-poor, waterlogged soil.

In swampy, saline habitats (e.g. mangroves) where the soil is waterlogged and deficient in oxygen, some plants such as Rhizophora develop special roots called pneumatophores. These roots grow vertically upward, away from gravity, and rise above the surface of the water/mud. They possess numerous small pores called pneumatothodes (lenticel-like openings) through which atmospheric oxygen can diffuse down to the roots buried in the anaerobic mud.
