The mechanism of vision proceeds through the following steps: (1) Light rays from an object enter the eye through the transparent cornea, which does most of the initial refraction/bending of light, and then pass through the pupil (whose diameter is regulated by the iris) and the lens, which fine-tunes the focus, so that a clear, inverted image of the object is formed on the retina, the light-sensitive innermost layer of the eye. (2) The retina contains two types of photoreceptor cells: rods, which are highly sensitive to dim light (used for night/scotopic vision but cannot distinguish colour) and contain the pigment rhodopsin (visual purple); and cones, which function in bright light (photopic vision) and are responsible for colour vision, containing the pigment iodopsin, of which there are three types (sensitive to red, green, and blue light respectively). (3) In rods, rhodopsin is a conjugated protein made of the protein opsin and the chromophore retinal (derived from vitamin A). When light falls on the retina, rhodopsin undergoes a rapid series of structural/photochemical changes — a process called bleaching — in which retinal changes its configuration (from 11-cis to all-trans-retinal); this triggers changes in the membrane permeability of the photoreceptor cell, generating a nerve impulse (an action potential) — this whole process is called phototransduction. (4) The generated impulse is passed on from the photoreceptor cells to the bipolar cells, and then to the ganglion cells, whose axons together form the optic nerve, which carries the visual signal out of the eye to the brain. (5) The optic nerves from both eyes meet at the optic chia …
