Imbibition is the diffusion of water into solid, dry, hydrophilic materials such as seeds, causing them to swell — the first step of seed germination.

Imbibition is a special type of passive water movement in which water molecules are adsorbed onto the surfaces of hydrophilic (water-attracting) colloidal particles within a dry solid, such as starch and protein in a seed, or cellulose in dry wood. Water moves along a concentration/water-potential gradient from a region of higher water potential (pure water) to a region of very low (highly negative) water potential in the dry material — the imbibant.

As water is imbibed, the material swells considerably and can generate substantial pressure (imbibitional pressure) — for example, dry wood wedges soaked in water were historically used to split rocks.
