Hybridisation mixes s and p orbitals of similar energy into new equivalent hybrids: sp (linear), sp2^2 (trigonal planar), sp3^3 (tetrahedral).

Hybridisation is the concept (proposed by Linus Pauling) in which atomic orbitals of an atom, having comparable energies, intermix to form an equal number of new, identical hybrid orbitals with the same energy, better suited to bond formation and giving a definite molecular geometry that simple atomic orbitals alone cannot explain.

sp hybridisation: one s and one p orbital mix to give 2 sp hybrid orbitals, oriented at 180° to each other (linear geometry).

Example: BeCl2_2 — Be is sp hybridised, giving a linear Cl–Be–Cl molecule. (Also seen in C in acetylene, HC≡CH.)

sp2^2 hybridisation: one s and two p orbitals mix to give 3 sp2^2 hybrid orbitals, arranged at 120° to each other in a plane (trigonal planar geometry).

Example: BF3_3 — B is sp2^2 hybridised, giving a trigonal planar molecule with F–B–F angles of 120°.
