Along a period, atomic radius decreases as effective nuclear charge rises; down a group, it increases as new electron shells are added.

Across a period (left to right): Atomic radius generally decreases. As we move across a period, electrons are added to the same principal shell while protons (and hence nuclear charge) also increase. The increasing effective nuclear charge pulls the electron cloud in more strongly, without a significant increase in shielding, so the atomic size shrinks.
