Conjugate acid = base + H+. Adding a proton to HCO3- gives H2CO3.

In Bronsted-Lowry acid-base theory, an acid and a base are related as a conjugate pair that differ by exactly one proton (H+):

Acid ⇌ Base + H+

So the conjugate ACID of a given base is obtained by ADDING one H+ to it, and the conjugate BASE of a given acid is obtained by REMOVING one H+ from it.

Here, HCO3- (bicarbonate ion) is acting as a Bronsted base (it can accept a proton). Adding H+ to it:

HCO3- + H+ → H2CO3

So H2CO3 (carbonic acid) is the conjugate acid of HCO3-.
