On a flat circular road, static friction alone provides the centripetal force; setting friction at its maximum value gives the maximum safe speed vmax=μrgv_{max}=\sqrt{\mu r g}.

Consider a vehicle of mass mm moving on a level (horizontal, unbanked) circular path of radius rr with speed vv. For the vehicle to move in a circle, it needs a centripetal force mv2/rmv^2/r directed toward the centre. On a level road, the only horizontal force available to provide this is friction between the tyres and the road surface:

The normal reaction from the road balances the vehicle's weight: N=mgN = mg. Friction can supply at most the limiting (maximum static) friction force, fmax=μN=μmgf_{max} = \mu N = \mu mg, where μ\mu is the coefficient of static friction between the tyres and road.
