The centre of mass of a two-particle system is the mass-weighted average position: X_cm = (m₁x₁+m₂x₂)/(m₁+m₂).

Derivation. Consider two particles of masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 located at positions x1x_1 and x2x_2 along the x-axis. The centre of mass is defined as the point where, if the total mass (m1+m2)(m_1+m_2) were concentrated, it would have the same first moment (mass × position) as the actual distribution:
