Bt toxin is produced by the bacterium as an inactive protoxin; it only becomes an active, gut-cell-lysing toxin after being solubilised and processed by the alkaline pH and proteases of an insect's gut — an environment the bacterium's own cell doesn't experience internally.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces crystal (Cry) proteins that act as insecticidal toxins. Inside the bacterium, this protein exists in an inactive protoxin form as crystals, which are harmless to the bacterium's own cells.
