India's rapid population growth results from the gap between a steeply declining death rate and a still-high birth rate, plus a large reproductive-age population.

Several factors together explain the population explosion witnessed in India:

  1. Steep decline in death rate (MMR and IMR): Improved health-care facilities, better sanitation, control of epidemics, and modern medicine have sharply reduced the maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR), so far fewer people die than in earlier decades.

  2. Comparatively high birth rate: Even though family planning programmes exist, the birth rate has not fallen as fast as the death rate, so more people are born each year than die, causing net population growth.

  3. Large number of people in reproductive age: A large proportion of India's population is of reproductive age, which means even a modest average family size still translates into a very large number of total births each year.
