Chasmogamous flowers open and can be cross-pollinated; cleistogamous flowers never open, so their anthers and stigma are always in contact and cross-pollination is impossible.

Chasmogamous flowers: These are flowers similar to typical flowers, with exposed anthers and stigma at maturity — that is, the flower opens up. Since pollinating agents (insects, wind, etc.) or human intervention can bring pollen from another flower to the exposed stigma, both self-pollination and cross-pollination are possible in chasmogamous flowers.

Cleistogamous flowers: These flowers never open at all. In cleistogamous flowers (seen in species such as Viola, Oxalis, and Commelina), the anthers and stigma lie close together within the closed flower. When the anthers dehisce inside the closed flower, pollen grains come in direct contact with the stigma of the same flower, achieving pollination automatically.
