The Gattermann reaction replaces a diazonium group with Cl or Br using copper powder and the corresponding hydrohalic acid directly, avoiding the need to first prepare a cuprous halide as Sandmeyer's reaction requires.

In the Gattermann reaction, an aryl diazonium salt is treated with copper powder in the presence of the halogen acid (HCl\text{HCl} or HBr\text{HBr}), which decomposes the diazonium salt with loss of N2\text{N}_2 and replacement by the halogen:

ArN2+Cl−→Cu/HCl ArCl+N2\text{ArN}_2^+\text{Cl}^- \xrightarrow[\text{Cu/HCl}]{}\ \text{ArCl} + \text{N}_2

(similarly with HBr\text{HBr} for ArBr.)

The closely related Sandmeyer reaction achieves the same conversion but requires the diazonium salt to be treated with a freshly and separately prepared cuprous halide, Cu2Cl2\text{Cu}_2\text{Cl}_2 or Cu2Br2\text{Cu}_2\text{Br}_2.
