An ammeter is a current-measuring device with very low resistance; a galvanometer becomes an ammeter of any desired range by shunting most of the current through a small parallel resistance.

What is an ammeter? An ammeter is an instrument used to measure the electric current flowing through a circuit. It is always connected in series in the circuit so that the full current to be measured passes through it, and it must have very low resistance so it doesn't appreciably change the current it is measuring.

Converting a galvanometer into an ammeter of a required range:

A galvanometer (of resistance GG, full-scale current IgI_g) can only safely carry a small current IgI_g. To let it read a much larger current II (the required range), a low-resistance shunt SS is connected in parallel with the galvanometer. This shunt diverts the bulk of the current (I−Ig)(I - I_g) around the galvanometer, letting only IgI_g pass through it at full-scale deflection.
