An atom bomb releases energy by splitting heavy nuclei (fission); a hydrogen bomb releases (much more) energy by fusing light nuclei together (fusion), a process that itself needs a fission explosion to trigger the extreme temperatures required.

Atom bomb — nuclear fission: A heavy, unstable nucleus (such as 92235U^{235}_{92}\text{U} or 94239Pu^{239}_{94}\text{Pu}) absorbs a neutron and splits into two lighter nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy plus 2–3 more neutrons. These neutrons can strike further heavy nuclei, sustaining an uncontrolled chain reaction that releases energy explosively in a very short time.
