Interference is the superposition effect of coherent waves; it needs coherent sources of the same frequency to produce a stable fringe pattern.

Interference of light is the phenomenon in which two or more light waves, travelling from different sources (or split from a single source) and overlapping in a region of space, superpose to produce a resultant intensity pattern with alternating bright (constructive interference) and dark (destructive interference) regions, called fringes. At points of constructive interference, the waves arrive in phase and their amplitudes add, while at points of destructive interference they arrive out of phase and tend to cancel.

Two essential conditions for observing sustained interference:

  1. Coherent sources: The two sources must maintain a constant (or zero) phase difference between them at all times. Without coherence, the phase relationship between the waves fluctuates randomly, and the interference pattern shifts too rapidly to be observed — the eye/detector only sees a time-averaged uniform illumination. …
