Important steps of the export procedure:

  • Receipt of enquiry and sending quotation — the prospective importer sends an enquiry; the exporter replies with a quotation (proforma invoice) stating price, quality and terms.
  • Receipt of order (indent) — on acceptance, the importer places a firm order/indent.
  • Assessing credit and securing payment — the exporter checks the importer's creditworthiness and asks for a letter of credit to ensure payment.
  • Obtaining export licence/IEC — the firm obtains an Import-Export Code (IEC) and any required licence, and registers with the relevant authorities.
  • Arranging pre-shipment finance — the exporter obtains finance from the bank to procure/produce and pack the goods.
  • Production/procurement and packing of the goods as per the order, properly marked and packed.
  • Pre-shipment inspection — getting a certificate of quality inspection where required.
  • Excise and customs clearance — completing customs formalities (shipping bill etc.) and reserving space on the ship through a clearing & forwarding agent.
  • Shipment of goods — loading the goods; the shipping company issues a mate's receipt, exchanged for the bill of lading. …
