Liberalisation frees the economy from controls; its features include ending licensing, freeing prices and trade, and deregulating finance.

Meaning: Liberalisation means the removal or relaxation of government restrictions, controls and regulations on economic activity, so as to give greater freedom to the private sector and let market forces operate. In India it was a key part of the 1991 reforms.

Three features of liberalisation:

  1. Abolition of industrial licensing: Most industries were freed from the requirement of a government licence to set up, expand or produce, removing the 'licence-permit raj'.
  2. Freeing of prices and reduction of trade/investment controls: Price controls were eased, import and export restrictions and tariffs were reduced, and limits on foreign investment were relaxed. …
