Lichens are algae-fungi partnerships; viroids and prions are both sub-viral infectious agents (RNA-only and protein-only respectively); chemosynthetic bacteria make their own food using energy from inorganic chemical oxidation.

  1. Lichens: Lichens are a symbiotic (mutually beneficial) association between a fungus (mycobiont) and a photosynthetic partner — either a green alga or a cyanobacterium (phycobiont). The fungus provides shelter, water and minerals, while the alga/cyanobacterium provides food through photosynthesis. Lichens are good indicators of air pollution because they cannot survive in polluted air (e.g. with SO2).
  2. Viroids: Discovered by T.O. Diener (1971), viroids are infectious agents even smaller than viruses. They consist only of free, low-molecular-weight RNA, without the protein coat (capsid) that surrounds viruses. Viroids are known to cause plant diseases (e.g., potato spindle tuber disease).
  3. Prions: Prions are unusual infectious agents that are proteinaceous (made of protein) and contain no nucleic acid at all. They are abnormally folded versions of a normal cellular protein, and they cause disease by inducing normal protein molecules to also misfold. Prions are responsible for slow, fatal neurodegenerative diseases in mammals, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans and 'mad cow disease' in cattle. …
