Algae have several important economic uses:
-
As food: Many algae are directly consumed as food, e.g. Porphyra, Laminaria and Sargassum are eaten in some countries; Chlorella and Spirulina are single-celled/simple algae rich in protein, used as protein-rich food supplements, especially for astronauts and in areas of protein deficiency.
-
Commercial products: Agar, obtained from red algae such as Gelidium and Gracilaria, is widely used to grow microorganisms in laboratories, and in the preparation of ice-creams and jellies. Algin, obtained from brown algae, and carrageenan, from red algae, are used as thickening/emulsifying agents in the food and cosmetic industries.
-
Oxygen release: Being photosynthetic, marine and freshwater algae are estimated to contribute about half of the total carbon dioxide fixation and oxygen release on Earth, making them ecologically vital.
