Moving up the taxonomic hierarchy from species to Kingdom widens the group and reduces the number of characters common to all its members.

The taxonomic hierarchy (Species -> Genus -> Family -> Order -> Class -> Phylum/Division -> Kingdom) arranges categories from the most specific to the most general. A species is a group of very closely related organisms sharing almost all their characters (they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring). As we go up to Genus, Family, and so on, each higher category includes members of the categories below it plus additional, more distantly related organisms.
