The Wurtz-Fittig reaction couples an aryl halide and an alkyl halide with sodium in dry ether to produce an alkylbenzene (an aromatic hydrocarbon with an alkyl substituent).

The ordinary Wurtz reaction couples two molecules of an alkyl halide using sodium metal in dry ether to give a higher alkane:

2R−X+2Na→dry etherR−R+2NaX2R{-}X + 2Na \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} R{-}R + 2NaX

The Wurtz-Fittig reaction is a variant of this in which a mixture of an aryl halide (such as bromobenzene) and an alkyl halide (such as methyl bromide) is treated with sodium metal in dry ether. The sodium promotes coupling between the aryl and alkyl groups, giving an alkylbenzene:

C6H5−Br+CH3−Br+2Na→dry etherC6H5−CH3+2NaBrC_6H_5{-}Br + CH_3{-}Br + 2Na \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} C_6H_5{-}CH_3 + 2NaBr

(bromobenzene + methyl bromide → toluene)
