The electron-donating effect of an alkyl group attached to a pi system, caused by overlap between a C-H sigma bond and the adjacent p-orbital/pi system, is called hyperconjugation.

When an alkyl group (e.g., -CH3) is directly bonded to an unsaturated centre (a C=C double bond, an aromatic ring, or a carbocation), one of its C-H sigma bonds can align with the adjacent empty or pi p-orbital. This allows partial delocalisation of the sigma-bonding electrons into the pi system, effectively donating electron density into it.
