An orbit is Bohr's classical, fixed circular electron path with definite radius and energy; an orbital is a quantum-mechanical three-dimensional region of space with a specific shape where an electron is most likely to be found — orbitals reflect the uncertainty principle, orbits do not.

Four key differences between an orbit and an orbital:

  1. Definition/nature: An orbit is a well-defined circular path around the nucleus in which an electron is assumed to revolve (as proposed in Bohr's atomic model). An orbital is a three-dimensional region of space around the nucleus where the probability of finding an electron is maximum (95% or so), as described by quantum mechanics (the wave function psi).

  2. Precision of electron's position/path: In an orbit, the exact position and velocity (momentum) of the electron at any instant can, in principle, be known. In an orbital, only the probability of locating the electron in a given region can be known — the exact path/trajectory of the electron cannot be defined, consistent with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
