Equating the gravitational force GMm/R^2 to mg gives g = GM/R^2, the acceleration due to gravity at Earth's surface.

Definition: Acceleration due to gravity (g) is the acceleration with which a freely falling body accelerates towards the centre of the Earth, caused solely by the Earth's gravitational attraction.

Derivation: By Newton's law of gravitation, the force of attraction between the Earth (mass M) and a body of mass m at (or near) the Earth's surface, separated by the Earth's radius R, is:

F = GMm/R^2

By Newton's second law, this same force also equals mg (the weight of the body):

mg = GMm/R^2

Cancelling m from both sides:

g = GM/R^2
