SHM is periodic motion with restoring acceleration proportional to displacement; its velocity is v = ω√(A²−x²).

Definition: Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) is a type of periodic motion in which the restoring force (and hence acceleration) acting on the particle is always directed towards a fixed mean (equilibrium) position, and its magnitude is directly proportional to the displacement of the particle from that mean position:

F=−kx⇒a=−ω2xF = -kx \quad\Rightarrow\quad a = -\omega^2 x

where ω is the angular frequency and the negative sign shows the force/acceleration is always opposite in direction to the displacement (i.e., restoring).

Derivation of velocity:

The displacement of a particle in SHM at time t can be written as:

x=Asin⁡(ωt+ϕ)x = A\sin(\omega t + \phi)

where A is the amplitude. Differentiating with respect to time to get velocity:

v=dxdt=Aωcos⁡(ωt+ϕ)v = \dfrac{dx}{dt} = A\omega\cos(\omega t + \phi)
