Demand depends on own price, prices of related goods, income, tastes, expectations and (for the market) number of buyers.

The factors determining the demand for a commodity are:

  1. Own price: normally, a fall in price raises quantity demanded and a rise lowers it (law of demand).
  2. Prices of related goods: a rise in the price of a substitute raises demand for the good; a rise in the price of a complement lowers it.
  3. Income of the consumer: for normal goods demand rises with income, for inferior goods it falls as income rises.
  4. Tastes and preferences: fashion, habit, custom and advertising raise or lower demand.
  5. Expectations of future prices: if prices are expected to rise, present demand increases. …
