Productivity is standardised per unit area per unit time so different ecosystems can be compared; Net Primary Productivity is what remains of Gross Primary Productivity after the producers' own respiratory consumption is subtracted.

How productivity is expressed: To allow comparison between ecosystems of different sizes, primary productivity is expressed as the amount of organic matter (biomass) or energy fixed, per unit area, per unit time — commonly in units of g/m²/yr (grams of dry matter produced per square metre per year) or kcal/m²/yr (kilocalories of energy fixed per square metre per year).

Relationship between GPP and NPP:

  • Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) is the total/gross rate of production of organic matter (biomass) during photosynthesis by producers (autotrophs) in an ecosystem.
  • Producers use a substantial part of this fixed energy/biomass for their own respiration (R) — growth, maintenance, repair. …
