Both desert plants and animals are shaped by the same core pressures — extreme heat and scarcity of water — but plants adapt structurally/physiologically while animals rely heavily on behavioural strategies alongside physiological ones.

Plant adaptations (xerophytes):

  1. Thick, waxy cuticle on leaf/stem surfaces to minimise water loss through transpiration.
  2. Sunken stomata (located in pits, sometimes covered with hairs) to reduce the rate of water vapour loss.
  3. Reduced leaves, or leaves modified into spines (e.g., cacti), which lowers the surface area available for transpiration; photosynthesis is instead carried out by the green, fleshy stem.
  4. Extensive and/or very deep root systems that either spread widely near the surface to capture occasional rainfall quickly, or grow very deep to reach the water table.
  5. Succulence — thick, fleshy stems/leaves with water-storage tissue that stores water during rare rainfall for use during long dry spells.
  6. CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis — stomata remain closed during the hot day (preventing water loss) and open only at night to take in CO2, which is fixed and stored as an acid to be used for photosynthesis the following day.

Animal adaptations:

  1. Nocturnal or crepuscular habits — many desert animals (e.g., kangaroo rat, many reptiles) are active mainly at night or during cooler dawn/dusk hours, avoiding peak daytime heat.
  2. Burrowing behaviour — living in underground burrows during the day, where the temperature is far more moderate than the surface.
  3. Concentrated urine and dry faecal matter to minimise water loss during excretion (kidneys reabsorb water very efficiently). …
