Activation energy is the energy barrier reactant molecules must cross to form products; photochemical reactions are those triggered by light absorption rather than heat.

(a) Activation Energy (EaE_a):

Not all molecular collisions between reactants lead to a reaction — only those with sufficient energy and correct orientation do. Activation energy is defined as the minimum extra energy that the reacting molecules (at their average energy) must acquire in order to reach the energy of the "activated complex" (transition state) and successfully convert into products. It is the difference between the threshold energy and the average kinetic energy of the reacting molecules. A lower EaE_a means a faster reaction at a given temperature, since more molecules will possess enough energy to cross the barrier.

(b) Photochemical Reactions: …
