Light accelerates the oxidation of chloroform by atmospheric oxygen into phosgene (COCl₂), a highly toxic gas; dark bottles block this photochemical reaction.

Chloroform (CHCl3\text{CHCl}_3) slowly undergoes autoxidation on exposure to light and air:

2 CHCl3+O2→light2 COCl2(phosgene)+2 HCl2\,\text{CHCl}_3 + \text{O}_2 \xrightarrow{\text{light}} 2\,\text{COCl}_2\text{(phosgene)} + 2\,\text{HCl}

Phosgene (carbonyl chloride, COCl₂) is an extremely poisonous and corrosive gas (it was used as a chemical warfare agent), and the HCl formed alongside is also corrosive and can damage the chloroform's container.

To prevent this reaction, chloroform bottles are:

  1. Made of dark/amber-coloured glass, which blocks the light needed to drive the oxidation, and …
