A voltmeter must draw as little current as possible from the circuit it measures, so a large resistance is added in series with the galvanometer.

A galvanometer is a sensitive current-detecting device with a small resistance GG and a small full-scale current IgI_g. To convert it into a voltmeter that reads potential difference across a component WITHOUT disturbing the circuit much, it must have a very HIGH resistance (ideally infinite) so it draws negligible current.
