Microwaves are short-wavelength radio waves generated electronically for radar and communication; infrared waves are the heat radiation emitted by warm objects and molecules.

Microwaves:

  • Wavelength range: roughly 1 mm to 0.3 m (frequency ~1 GHz to 300 GHz).
  • Produced by special vacuum-tube devices such as klystrons, magnetrons, and Gunn diodes.
  • Because of their short wavelength, they can be transmitted as narrow beams, making them ideal for:
    • RADAR systems (used in aircraft navigation, speed-guns, weather forecasting),
    • microwave ovens (their frequency matches the resonant absorption of water molecules, heating food),
    • satellite and mobile communication links (point-to-point line-of-sight transmission),
    • analysing the fine (atomic/molecular) structure of matter.

Infrared waves:

  • Wavelength range: roughly 700 nm to 1 mm, lying just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum.
  • Produced by hot bodies and molecules — any object above absolute zero emits infrared radiation due to the vibration/rotation of its molecules (this is why IR is often called "heat radiation").
  • Applications:
    • Remote controls for TVs and other electronic devices,
    • Physiotherapy (used to treat muscular strain by warming tissue),
    • Night-vision / thermal imaging cameras (detect warm bodies/objects in the dark), …
