The Ledger is the "book of final entry" — it classifies every journalised transaction into separate accounts so the net position of each account (asset, liability, expense, income, capital) can be known.

A business enters into a very large number of transactions during the year. The Journal (and the subsidiary books) record these transactions chronologically, but it does not tell us, at a glance, what the final effect is on a particular account — say, a particular debtor or the cash account. The Ledger solves this: every transaction debited and credited in the journal/subsidiary books is posted to the respective account opened in the Ledger, so that all transactions concerning one account are brought together at one place.
