Special purpose books are the subsidiary books into which a firm's large volume of similar, repetitive transactions are split so that each type of transaction (cash, credit purchases, credit sales, returns, bills) is recorded in its own dedicated register, in CBSE/NCERT-aligned JK Class-11 Accountancy terms.

Instead of recording every transaction of a business in one single Journal, a firm with a reasonably large number of transactions divides the Journal into several special purpose books (also called subsidiary books or books of original entry), each meant for one class of transaction. This saves time, allows division of clerical work, and makes it easy to locate a transaction of a particular nature.

The various special purpose books are:

Special Purpose BookRecords
Cash BookAll cash and bank receipts and payments
Purchases (Journal) BookCredit purchases of goods only
Sales (Journal) BookCredit sales of goods only
Purchases Return (Returns Outward) BookGoods returned to suppliers
Sales Return (Returns Inward) BookGoods returned by customers
Bills Receivable BookBills of exchange / promissory notes received
