An Error of Principle is a wrong classification of a transaction between capital and revenue items (or between the correct type of account), not a wrong amount — so it never disturbs the Trial Balance.

While recording a transaction, an accountant must follow the basic accounting principle that capital expenditure should be debited to an asset account and revenue expenditure/income should be debited/credited to a nominal (P&L) account. An Error of Principle is committed when this classification rule is violated, even though the double-entry (equal debit and credit of the correct amount) is otherwise maintained.

Example: If ₹50,000 spent on installation of new machinery (a capital expenditure that should be added to the Machinery account) is wrongly debited to the Repairs Account (a revenue expense), this is an Error of Principle — the debit and credit still tally (so the Trial Balance still agrees), but the Machinery account is understated and the period's profit is understated because an asset has been wrongly treated as an expense.
