Unemployment causes economic losses (output, income, growth) and serious social costs (poverty, inequality, crime, psychological distress).

Economic consequences:

  1. Loss of national output/GDP: a country's potential output (what could have been produced had everyone willing to work been employed) is permanently lost — a pure waste of productive manpower.
  2. Loss of human capital: an economy that invested in educating and training its workforce gets no return on that investment when the educated/skilled remain unemployed, representing a waste of past investment in human capital.
  3. Rising poverty and inequality: unemployed individuals and their dependants lose their source of income, pushing many households into poverty and widening income inequality.
  4. Increased dependency burden: a larger share of the population becomes dependent on a smaller employed section, straining family and government resources (e.g. unemployment benefits/subsidies).

Social consequences:

  1. Social unrest and crime: prolonged unemployment, especially among the youth, can breed frustration, leading to a rise in crime, social tension, and even political instability.
  2. Psychological effects: unemployment causes stress, loss of self-esteem, and a sense of helplessness among affected individuals and their families.
  3. Exploitation of labour: a large pool of unemployed/underemployed workers weakens workers' bargaining power, making them vulnerable to exploitation (e.g. being forced to accept very low wages or poor working conditions).
  4. Increased migration: unemployment in one region forces workers to migrate elsewhere (e.g. rural to urban) in search of jobs, often leading to overcrowding and strain on urban infrastructure. …
