Sustainable development means growing and developing in a way that satisfies today's needs while preserving environmental resources and capacities for future generations — this requires using resources responsibly and keeping pollution within limits the environment can absorb.

Definition: As defined by the Brundtland Commission (1987) and widely used in the NCERT curriculum, sustainable development is "development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." It links economic growth with environmental protection and intergenerational equity — fairness between the present and future generations.

Conditions for sustainable development:
