Statistics is the science of collecting, classifying, presenting, analysing and interpreting numerical data, in both its singular sense (as a method/science) and its plural sense (as numerical data itself).

The subject-matter of Statistics can be studied under two senses:

  1. Plural sense (Statistics as data): refers to numerical facts systematically collected — e.g. the data on population, production, prices, etc.
  2. Singular sense (Statistics as a science/method): refers to the body of methods/techniques used to collect, organise, present, analyse and interpret such data.

The actual subject-matter, in its methodological/singular sense, covers these stages:

  • Collection of Data: gathering relevant data through census, sample surveys, questionnaires, etc.
  • Organisation of Data: editing, classifying and tabulating the raw data into a systematic and usable form.
  • Presentation of Data: displaying organised data through tables, diagrams and graphs for easy comprehension.
