Property: the algebraic sum of deviations of all values from the arithmetic mean is always zero.

For any set of observations X1,X2,...,XnX_1, X_2, ..., X_n with arithmetic mean Xˉ\bar{X}, if we compute the deviation of each value from the mean, (Xi−Xˉ)(X_i - \bar{X}), and sum all these deviations, the positive deviations (values above the mean) exactly cancel out the negative deviations (values below the mean), so:

Σ(Xi−Xˉ)=ΣXi−nXˉ=nXˉ−nXˉ=0\Sigma (X_i - \bar{X}) = \Sigma X_i - n\bar{X} = n\bar{X} - n\bar{X} = 0
