This question has an OR — Part (a) discusses the importance of credit in rural development; Part (b) (OR) explains the meaning and sustaining of Sustainable Economic Development. Both are answered in full below.

Part (a): Importance of Credit in Rural Development

  • Removes dependence on costly informal credit: Rural households, especially farmers, often need credit to buy seeds, fertilisers, and equipment before any income is earned from the harvest; without access to formal credit they are forced to borrow from moneylenders at exorbitant interest rates, often leading to indebtedness.
  • Enables investment in agriculture: Timely and adequate credit allows farmers to invest in better inputs (HYV seeds, irrigation, machinery), raising productivity and output.
  • Supports non-farm rural activities: Credit is equally important for rural non-farm activities — small-scale industry, animal husbandry, handicrafts — which diversify rural incomes beyond agriculture.
  • Institutional credit framework: Recognising this need, India built up a wide network of rural/institutional credit — cooperative credit societies, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), commercial banks (post nationalisation in 1969), and NABARD, which coordinates rural credit — to provide farmers with cheaper, more reliable credit than moneylenders.
  • Micro-credit/SHGs: More recently, microcredit through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) has become important in providing small loans to the rural poor (especially women) without demanding collateral, helping reduce rural poverty.
  • Overall impact: Access to timely, affordable credit protects farmers from distress sales and indebtedness, raises agricultural productivity, and supports diversification of the rural economy — making it a cornerstone of rural development.

OR — Sustainable Economic Development

Meaning: Sustainable Economic Development is a pattern of development that meets the needs and aspirations of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs — i.e., growth that does not deplete or degrade the natural resource base on which future growth itself depends.

How it can be sustained:

  1. Judicious/efficient use of natural resources — avoiding wasteful and excessive extraction of renewable and non-renewable resources.
  2. Promoting renewable sources of energy — greater reliance on solar, wind, and other renewable energy to reduce dependence on exhaustible fossil fuels.
  3. Conservation and afforestation — protecting forests, soil, and water resources, and increasing green cover to maintain ecological balance. …
