Monocot vascular bundles are scattered and closed (no cambium); dicot vascular bundles are arranged in a ring and open (cambium present), allowing secondary growth.

Both monocot and dicot stems have conjoint, collateral vascular bundles (xylem and phloem lying side by side on the same radius), but they differ in arrangement and structure:
