Molluscs are soft-bodied, mostly shelled, unsegmented invertebrates with a distinct head-foot-visceral hump body plan.

Phylum Mollusca is the second largest animal phylum after Arthropoda, and includes familiar animals such as snails, mussels, oysters, octopuses and squids. Two of its most important defining characteristics are:

Body organisation and shell: the body is soft, unsegmented and bilaterally symmetrical, typically divisible into three regions — a distinct head, a ventral muscular foot used for locomotion, and a dorsal visceral hump containing most of the internal organs. A fold of skin called the mantle covers the visceral hump, and the mantle usually secretes a hard, calcareous protective shell (as in snails, bivalves like Unio and Pila), though the shell may be reduced or internal in some groups (e.g., Octopus). …
