Birds (Class Aves) are warm-blooded vertebrates highly modified for flight. The main modifications are:
1. Body shape: The body is spindle-shaped (streamlined) to reduce air resistance during flight.
2. Feathers & wings: The body is covered with feathers (an exclusive feature of birds) that provide insulation and the flight surface; the forelimbs are modified into wings.
3. Lightweight skeleton: The bones are hollow with air cavities (pneumatic bones), making the skeleton very light yet strong. The jaws are toothless and covered by a light horny beak.
4. Powerful flight muscles: The sternum bears a keel (carina) to which the large pectoral (flight) muscles are attached, providing the power for the down-stroke of the wings.
5. Efficient respiration: Lungs are connected to air sacs that extend into the body cavity and bones; these provide continuous (double) oxygenation during both inspiration and expiration, and also reduce weight and give buoyancy.
