Coelom is a true, mesoderm-lined body cavity; based on the presence/lining of this cavity, animals are classified as coelomate, pseudocoelomate (e.g., Ascaris) or acoelomate (e.g., Planaria).

Step 1 — What is a coelom?

During embryonic development, a fluid-filled space may form between the body wall (derived from ectoderm and outer mesoderm) and the alimentary canal (derived from endoderm and inner mesoderm). When this cavity is completely lined by mesoderm on all sides (both the body-wall side and the gut side), it is called a true coelom (e.g., in annelids, molluscs, arthropods, echinoderms, chordates). Animals possessing this are called coelomates (or eucoelomates).

Step 2 — Pseudocoelomate.

In some animals, a body cavity is present but it is not completely lined by mesoderm — mesoderm is present as scattered pouches between the ectoderm and endoderm rather than a continuous lining. This is called a pseudocoelom, and the animals are pseudocoelomates.

  • Example: Ascaris (roundworm), belonging to phylum Aschelminthes (Nematoda).

Step 3 — Acoelomate. …
