Salient features of Phylum Annelida:
- Found in marine, freshwater and terrestrial (moist) habitats.
- Body triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical, and shows true metameric segmentation (the body is divided into a linear series of similar segments or metameres) — the name 'Annelida' itself means 'ringed'.
- Organ-system level of body organisation; coelom is a true, schizocoelomate coelom.
- Body wall has circular and longitudinal muscles that, acting against the fluid-filled coelom (a hydrostatic skeleton), enable locomotion.
- Possess a closed circulatory system (blood flows in defined vessels).
- Nervous system consists of paired ganglia joined by lateral nerves to a double ventral nerve cord.
- Excretion is carried out by segmentally arranged nephridia.
- Respiration occurs through the moist body surface or through gills.
- May be unisexual (e.g. Nereis) or hermaphrodite (e.g. earthworm, leech).
- Common examples: Nereis, Pheretima (earthworm), Hirudinaria (leech).
Role of Nephridia:
Nephridia are the excretory and osmoregulatory organs of annelids, present in pairs in most body segments. Each nephridium is a tubular structure that:
- Opens internally into the coelom through a ciliated funnel-like opening called the nephrostome, which draws in coelomic fluid. …
