Urochordates have a notochord only in the larval tail (lost in the adult), while Cephalochordates retain a notochord running the entire length of the body throughout life.

Both Urochordata and Cephalochordata are subphyla of Chordata (along with Vertebrata), sharing the basic chordate features (notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, paired pharyngeal gill slits at some stage) - but they differ in how these features persist into adulthood:

Urochordata (Tunicata):

  • Marine animals, often found singly or in colonies.
  • Notochord is present ONLY in the tail of the free-swimming larva and is lost as the animal metamorphoses into the sessile/tunic-covered adult.
  • Body is covered by a test/tunic made of a cellulose-like carbohydrate (tunicin).
  • Example: Ascidia (sea squirt).

Cephalochordata:

  • Marine animals, small and fish-like in shape. …
