Viruses are acellular, obligate intracellular parasites made of a nucleic acid core (DNA or RNA, not both) surrounded by a protein coat (capsid); they show no signs of life outside a host cell.

Structure:

  • Viruses are so small they can be seen only under an electron microscope, and they lack any cellular organisation (no cytoplasm, organelles, or cell membrane of their own).
  • Every virus particle (virion) has an outer protein coat called the capsid, made up of small protein subunits called capsomeres, arranged around the genetic material. The capsid protects the nucleic acid and gives the virus its characteristic shape (helical, polyhedral, or complex).
  • Some animal viruses additionally have an outer lipoprotein envelope derived from the host cell membrane.

Genetic material:

  • Every virus contains only ONE type of nucleic acid as its genome — either DNA or RNA — never both together.
  • The nucleic acid may be single-stranded or double-stranded, and linear or circular, depending on the virus. …
