Bacteria show autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition; among heterotrophs, saprotrophic (saprophytic) bacteria are the most abundant, living on dead organic matter by external enzymatic digestion.

Bacteria show remarkable diversity in modes of nutrition, broadly divided into two categories:

1. Autotrophic bacteria: synthesise their own food.

  • Photosynthetic autotrophs use bacteriochlorophyll and fix carbon dioxide using light energy (e.g. purple and green sulphur bacteria).
  • Chemosynthetic autotrophs oxidise various inorganic substances such as nitrates, nitrites and ammonia, and use the released energy for ATP synthesis; they play a vital role in recycling nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and sulphur.

2. Heterotrophic bacteria: the vast majority of bacteria are heterotrophic, depending on other organisms/organic matter for food, and can be:

  • Parasitic: living in or on a living host and deriving nutrients from it, often causing disease (pathogenic bacteria).
  • Saprotrophic (saprophytic): obtain nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter, such as fallen leaves, animal remains and other organic waste. …
