Frogs can absorb oxygen dissolved in water directly through their moist, vascularised skin by cutaneous (through-skin) respiration.

Frogs are amphibians and use more than one mode of respiration depending on whether they are in water or on land:

  • Cutaneous respiration: gas exchange through the thin, moist, richly vascularised skin. This works both in air and, importantly, underwater, because dissolved oxygen in water can diffuse directly across the skin into the blood capillaries beneath it.
  • Buccopharyngeal respiration: gas exchange through the lining of the buccal (mouth) cavity, which works using air, not dissolved oxygen from water.
  • Pulmonary respiration: through the lungs, using air, when the frog is out of water. …
